NATO launches initiative to help detect explosives and firearms in public transport

NATO announced on 14 May 2018 that it has launched a new initiative to help detect explosives and firearms in public transport environments.

The programme brings together experts from France, Ukraine and South Korea to design a microwave imaging system, which will be able to detect explosives and concealed weapons in mass transport systems.

The project, called microwave imaging curtain (MIC), has been co-funded by NATO and France, and the system is expected to be ready for on-site testing by 2020. The use of microwaves for imaging applications is thought to be a potentially productive area of research, particularly in the areas of security imaging and medical imaging.
